Strong 5.9 quake rattles SR Japan Disaster Zone

An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale on Friday (12 / 8) surprising northeastern Japan. The quake rocked the area devastated by the earthquake and tsunami in March. However, there were no reports of damage or casualties and no tsunami warning.

The quake struck at 03:22 local time (01:22 GMT) at a depth of 38 kilometers (24 miles). ''Epicenter located 18 kilometers from the city of Iwaki, Fukushima prefecture,''said United States Geological Survey.

Fukushima has become the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years since the tsunami in March destroy a nuclear power plant (NPP) in there. The damage caused radiation leaks into the soil, air and sea. Radiation leak forced thousands to flee their homes.

Tokyo Electric Power Company, which crippled the nuclear power plant operator, said it had seen no additional problems caused by recent earthquakes. The earthquake also shook buildings in Tokyo. Japan's Meteorological Agency measured the quake at 6.0 magnitude at a depth of 50 kilometers.

The tsunami caused by the 9.0 magnitude earthquake last March to eliminate the entire stretch of coast northeast of the country. The tsunami killed more than 20,000 people, or disappeared. Japan, which is located at the junction of four tectonic plates, has 20 percent of the strongest earthquakes recorded in the Earth every year.
